Strengthening Relationships Begins Before the Conversation
Jan 27, 2026There’s a moment most of us recognize, even if we don’t always name it.
Your heart starts to race.
Your thoughts jump ahead.
Your body tightens—before a single word is spoken.
These moments can feel confusing, even discouraging—especially when you care deeply about your relationships and want to show up well.
What I’ve learned—through my own life and my work—is this:
it’s rarely the conversation that creates distance.
It’s what happens in the body before the conversation even begins.
A Moment That Changed Everything for Me
Years ago, early in my relationship with my now-husband Dave, I had one of those moments.
He didn’t answer the phone about ten minutes after getting off work.
That was all it took.
My body flooded with urgency.
My thoughts raced toward the worst-case scenario.
Old stories from past betrayals rose up without invitation.
“He’s cheating on me,” my trauma-brain insisted.
By the time Dave walked through the door—perfectly innocent, having simply stayed late talking with his brother—I was already braced for a conflict that didn’t actually exist.
And that’s when something became very clear to me:
This reaction had nothing to do with Dave.
It had everything to do with a nervous system that didn’t yet feel safe.
When I shared what had happened inside me—not as accusation, but as truth—Dave met me with patience and care. That moment showed me something powerful: dysregulation creates stories that don’t belong to the present.
And regulation is what allows connection to stay intact.
Why Regulation Comes Before Communication
Many of us have been taught that better relationships come from better communication.
But what I’ve seen again and again—personally and professionally—is that communication only works when the nervous system feels settled enough to support it.
When we’re dysregulated:
-
words disappear
-
tone sharpens
-
assumptions replace curiosity
-
connection feels risky
No amount of insight can override that.
So we start somewhere else.
Three Gentle Steps Toward Nervous System Regulation
1. Notice and Pause
The first step is simply noticing when your body has shifted into protection.
That pause—before sending the text, before speaking—is not avoidance.
It’s wisdom.
It creates space for choice.
2. Come Back to the Body
Regulation happens through the body, not the mind.
Slow, steady breathing through the nose—something I practice and teach through traditional Ashtanga yoga—helps bring the nervous system out of survival and back into presence.
You don’t need to force calm.
You just need to support it.
3. Choose From Values, Not Fear
Once your body settles, your values become accessible again.
This is where skills from Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT) come in—mindfulness, emotional regulation, interpersonal effectiveness, and distress tolerance.
From this place, communication becomes clearer, kinder, and more aligned with who you actually want to be.
What Changes When Regulation Comes First
When you learn to regulate before responding:
-
difficult conversations feel less threatening
-
trust deepens
-
emotional hangovers lessen
-
intimacy becomes safer
You begin to experience yourself differently—not as reactive or “too much,” but as grounded and capable.
Relationships don’t become perfect.
They become more honest, more spacious, and more connected.
A Gentle Invitation
If this resonates, you’re not alone—and you’re not behind.
Regulation is a skill that can be learned, practiced, and strengthened over time.
So I’ll leave you with this question:
What might change in your relationships if calm came first?
I’d love to hear what you’re noticing or reflecting on—feel free to share in the YouTube comments (video link below). And if you’d like to explore this work more deeply, you’ll find supportive resources linked at the end of this blog post.
Thank you for being here, and for choosing connection—starting with yourself.
With care,
